Service Description: The Watershed Boundary Dataset (WBD) defines the areal extent or perimeter of surface water drainage areas formed by the terrain and other landscape characteristics. Drainage areas are nested within each other in a multi-level, hierarchical system so that a large drainage area, such as the Upper Mississippi River, will be composed of multiple smaller drainage areas, such as the Wisconsin River. Each of these smaller areas can be further subdivided into smaller and smaller drainage areas. The WBD is made up of polygons nested into seven levels of data to include Regions (HU2), Subregions (HU4), Basins (HU6), Subbasins (HU8), Watersheds (HU10), Subwatersheds (HU12), and HU14. The WBD is commonly combined with other data themes, such as boundaries, elevation, structures, and transportation, to produce general reference base maps.
